Windows 10 includes a bunch of personalization settings that let you change your desktop background, windows colors, lock screen background, and more. Here is what you need to know to get your computer looking exactly how you want it. Once you choose a picture, you can decide how your picture will fit on your desktop—whether it fills, fits, stretches, tiles, and so on. After selecting your folder, you can also specify how often Windows changes the background picture, whether it shuffles the pictures randomly, and how the pictures should fit your desktop.
And if you prefer to keep things simple, you can use a solid color as your background. Unfortunately, the Personalization screen only lets you select one background, no matter how many monitors you have. If you do have multiple monitors, you can set a different background picture for each monitor by using File Explorer. They also both provide more advanced tools for working with backgrounds on a single monitor.
After picking an accent color, your next step is choosing where Windows uses that accent color. The second option uses the accent color for the title bar of your active window. We do, however, have a quick registry hack that can at least let you keep a black background on your Start menu and Action Center. The second option uses the accent color on the title bar of active windows, though we also have another hack for you if you want to use the accent color on inactive windows , as well.
And finally, you can enable a dark mode for settings and apps. Next, we move on to the Windows lock screen settings. The lock screen, remember, is the screen you click to slide out of the way so you can get to the sign in screen where you enter your user name and password. You can also set the lock screen background to be one of your pictures or a slideshow of pictures in a folder on your computer. It works the same way as setting your desktop background.
If you select a picture, just point Windows to the file you want to use. The advanced settings let you include your camera roll as a source for pictures, use only pictures that fit your screen, and select whether to show the lock screen instead of turning off the screen when the PC is inactive. If you select this last option, you can also set the screen to turn off after a set amount of time, or not at all. To save the new settings as a theme you need to go into Personalization-Themes-change theme and Right click the Unsaved Theme to Save it using your chosen name.
I strongly suggest starting with a the. You can do further registry or tweaks to the theme text file later to get it exactly how you want it.
Just to update my last post. Themes from Windows 7 only work fully in Windows 10 if they are based on a High Contrast theme. Some details though, can only be changed by either modifying them in the registry as I described earlier or editing the. There are some downsides to using High Contrast themes, as they affect the appearance of some software in ways which might be undesirable, but if you want to create a fully personalised colour scheme in Windows 10 then I think it is the only way at the moment.
This is a useless article, it starts by saying you can get colored title bars in windows 10 but then just tells me how to change the color of my taskbar. WTH is that? It is an old article. Initially, Microsoft allowed to change appearance and colors without hacks mentioned in the article.
The rest of article is still actual. The High Res Themes still have window borders and colored title bars for active and inactive windows so it may be possible for someone who understands the format of the theme definition files to make at least some custom appearance changes.
The color that appears is radically different than the hex coded color it is supposed to be, yet still is listed as the correct code that I put in. Or does Win10 use a different color system altogether? Windows 10 is more interested in keeping its built in lady spy, Cortana fed with our private information, than addressing our personal color choices. Task bars are not my issue. Is there a way to change the background color of my documents? I used to be able to eliminate the white pages and use a soft background color for Word and WordPerfect documents.
Much easier on the eyes than white! Can that still be done? Just bought this laptop and I think Windows 10 sucks compared to Windows Vista. You can read the cells on your screen but when the document prints they will be hidden.
Hope this helps. Finally, somebody who actually knows what they're doing! Thank you, Will. I knew all of the colors were adjustable via registry, I just wasn't sure which branch they were under. I appreciate you sharing this information with us. Hi I have just bought a new laptop with Windows 10 preinstalled. This thread is locked. I have the same question Report abuse. Details required :. Cancel Submit. Dear Rose, I think you have 3 options: 1. Sometime this may get you in some terrible security issues, consider Joe. Your desktop is the area you see when you have no windows open. Themes are groups of settings that affect the appearance of your operating system. You can use them to customize many different aspects of the way your computer looks. There are four different panels you can click on, as seen in the following photo.
There are three options you can choose from the first drop down box here. Play around with these to see how they each look with your photo.
This is great for taking, say, a family photo that you saved to a USB drive and making it into a desktop background. It defaults to your Pictures folder, but you can choose something else if you have photos saved elsewhere. It downloads and rotates through a selection of backgrounds from Microsoft. The other lock screen settings on this page are mainly used to customize what apps display data on your home screen. If you want an app to display while your screen is locked, you can click on one of the plus signs to add it.
There are a few settings that can be played with under here involving transparency and pulling extra accent colors from other areas.
