Gallows hill witch trials

For those who thought everything started in Salem like I did, only the trial took place in this town. I bought a book in the visitors center that told us that the town of Danvers is where the young girls gathered with Tituba in the home of Reverend Parris.

We drove to Danvers where behind another home we found the foundation of the Parris home. The epicenter is Danvers. It was originally known as Salem Village. It was awesome! I am a decendent of Rebecca Nurse and have wanted for years to go to that area to visit. I have such a reverence and respect for all these individuals that suffered so much at that time. I truly admire that they held onto their faith so strongly.

What a great lesson for us! We are finally going to try to make it there in August. Any advise any of you have for our visit would be much appreciated. The Coreys are buried in Peabody as well. Salem is fun and historical, but has come pretty far away from the tragedy of Very touristy.

Some good historical sites and museums, though! I lived in Salem and could be related to Dorcas Hoar, who was from Beverly and was by all accounts a quintessential witch. I studied the location of the burials and I thank you for this article. I had hoped to do something similar, but moved away and never did.

It is behind a drug store and parking lot now. This location would have been on the road between Salem Town and Village. Upon entering a town, there would often be the locations of gallows and pillories at this time period.

It was an advertisement for what to expect if you did not follow the rules. There are many similar examples in Massachusetts history. The witches were not to be buried.

This crevice or many of them, would be perfect places to leave the victims. They would not be left on the ground, no, they were at least tucked into the rocks. The families could easily find them after and bury them elsewhere.

I was there several times. No rocky coastline is evident there now. It must be well below the soil level. The hill could have even been covered with earth. Alice Nutter, in particular, was a soft spoken and well off lady and probably guilty of practising the at the time unpopular Catholic faith. The Most Haunted crew, however, have allegedly been harassed by entities claiming to be or giving the impression of the Pendle witches before.

What do you think? Is this site more or likely to be haunted by the ghosts of the witches than Pendle Hill itself? Did you watch Most Haunted Live? It is an open hill which is stepped as it rises, presumably to allow spectators to stand on flat ground rather than on a hill. It is currently a large area of open green recreation land sited on the northern side of Quernmore Road, and can be seen easily on Google Maps using the sattelite view.

Perhaps they were worried about finding some real spirits there? Most Haunted consists of Yvette, her husband Karl and her cousin Stuart winding the rest of the crew up by producing noises and performances to get the other crew members jumping, Karl even finds it hard to keep his face straight half of the time!

I agree with Sean. There are no woods at Gallows Hill, just a few trees around the edge of the field. When they are the Executive Producers of the show, it is in their interest to line their pockets with money. Its like every job, some are better paid then others! The date coincides with the first of three mass executions there.

Later victims included wealthy landowner John Proctor, killed in August. In a June symposium about the trials, Baker spoke about the volatile political and social climate in Salem in the s. At the time, an interim colonial government was in charge and Sir William Phips, the new governor, was considered weak. In response, says Baker, people felt a spiritual decline. Finger-pointing and mass hysteria ensued. It was an anxious time. In the years since 19 of the falsely accused were hanged as witches in Salem, the coastal town has never forgotten what happened.

Most of the trial activity took place in Salem. Some of the young accusers lived in Salem Village, later renamed Danvers. Every Halloween, as many as , visit for the event called Haunted Happenings.

Revelers dress as zombies and witches.
