Students missing school due to a religious or cultural observation have certain rights and accommodations available. In certain cases, a student can make an academic standing appeal to ask a Faculty or the Senate to reconsider their academic standing. A disciplinary appeals asks the Senate to reconsider a disciplinary decision enacted by the President of UBC. Students have rights under the syllabus policy.
This includes having the right to be aware of changes in the syllabus. The Senate policy describes actions students can take if they have an exam hardship or an exam clash. Undergraduates whose programs are direct-entry from secondary school have rights to add or drop a course in a certain time period and have exams occur before a certain date.
Students have rights under the Use of Formal Exam Period policy for when to take their final exams. Exam disruptions include bomb threats, fire alarms, inclement weather, and building-specific power outages. The Senate policy outlines what to expect if an exam disruption occurs.
A student can apply for a review of academic standing if they believe the final mark received in a deliverable or course was incorrectly calculated. Graduate students can temporarily interrupt their course of study and remain registered in the program for reasons outlined in the Senate policy.
